About Sarah Dorrance - San Francisco Mosaic Artist

Mosaic, is a way to communicate the mercy, substance and finiteness of the Earth and its transient inhabitants. Mosaic enables me to create functional art, from tiles and other everyday objects that I shop for in antique stores, old men’s garages and big dusty warehouses.

I paint with my tiles to let people touch a finite idea. A multi-dimensional interpretation of a moment in time, within the rapidly changing shape of the landscape and environment we exist in.  The textures of the world, feed us differently, depending the contours of the terrain and the depth of our connection with it.  The changing aspect of the mosaic chronicles this idea as succinctly as possible.

My art is meant to remind us of how the land was and how quickly it changes. To remind us of how it could be and how I wish it would be.  My benches are there to make people’s lives easier. It provides them a place to rest, convoke and commune with urban nature.

Mosaic is a useful and eternal art. It has been a storytelling device since the earliest of days of Mesopotamia passing through the Greek, Roman and Byzantine empires to us today. Long after I am gone, my representation of the anima will endure.
